According to Mining.com, citing Reuters, Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo recently signed an agreement to enhance lithium, cobalt, and other critical mineral supply chains needed for electric vehicles and clean energy. The agreement was signed during Goyal’s visit to Washington, with the goal of boosting the resilience of critical mineral sectors in both countries. It focuses on identifying equipment, services, and best practices to promote exploration, mining, processing, and recycling of these minerals. Both nations aim to collaborate with mineral-rich countries like those in Africa and South America.
During his speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Goyal highlighted that the agreement represents a multifaceted partnership, focusing on supply chain openness, technology development, and investment flows to accelerate green energy.
While negotiations are ongoing, India will not yet benefit from U.S. electric vehicle tax credits like Japan, which signed a similar agreement with the U.S. in the past to reduce dependence on foreign minerals.
