U.S. and Ukrainian officials have engaged in discussions over a proposed U.S.-Ukraine mineral agreement, but according to a source familiar with the matter, the atmosphere was described as confrontational, leaving little hope for a breakthrough.
According to reports, the latest draft of the agreement would grant the United States priority access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, while requiring Kyiv to deposit all revenue from both state-owned and private companies’ resource extraction into a joint investment fund.
However, the proposed agreement does not include any U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine — a point of contention likely fueling the tense negotiations.
On the 11th, a Ukrainian delegation arrived in Washington to continue negotiations regarding the deal.
