Manitoba Launches Strategy to Secure Critical Minerals and Strengthen Indigenous Partnerships

According to a report from Mining.com, the Province of Manitoba in Canada has announced the “Securing the Future of Critical Minerals” strategy to accelerate the development of critical mineral projects, while building strong partnerships with Indigenous communities. This initiative focuses on maintaining sustainable economic growth.

Jamie Moses, Manitoba’s Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade, and Natural Resources, stated that of the 34 minerals identified by the federal government as vital for promoting a green economy, Manitoba possesses 30, positioning it to supply materials necessary for a North American low-carbon economy.

Exploration for lithium and other minerals in the province has surged, with approximately 50 companies actively exploring critical minerals in Manitoba, representing over 70% of exploration companies in the region.

“Manitoba needs to expedite the development and production of new mines,” declared John Morris, co-chair of the Manitoba Mining Association (MAMI).

MAMI believes that streamlined regulatory policies and a one-stop service for critical minerals can expedite the permitting process. The association has participated in the formulation of several elements within this strategy and seeks to collaborate with the Province of Manitoba.

The strategy also aims to attract investment, create quality jobs, establish a dedicated critical minerals office to provide one-stop services, invest in essential regional infrastructure projects, and develop a provincial revenue-sharing model with Indigenous communities.

“The critical minerals strategy will secure Manitoba’s position as a global leader in responsible mineral development, providing Manitobans with well-paying jobs,” said Moses. “Regardless of the U.S. election results, our strategy ensures that Manitoba will remain a safe, reliable trade partner for years to come.”

The Manitoba government indicated that as the strategic initiatives progress, ongoing engagement with rights holders, communities, and businesses will continue.

“Indigenous and northern communities are essential to the success of the mining industry and the best development path for these communities and Manitoba’s economy,” added Ian Bushie, Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations and Indigenous Economic Development.

“By adopting a nation-to-nation approach, this strategy aims to deliver the benefits of critical minerals to Indigenous peoples through sustainable resource development. This ensures Indigenous voices are heard and provides them with more equitable financial opportunities within the resource sector, advancing economic inclusion.”
